Enabling Students to Use Writing Effectively for Learning and Communicating

This presentation illustrates how to use research-based practices to teach elementary school students to be effective writers. The presentation covers the four recommended practices in this topic. Educators can help students learn to use writing for communication and for learning by:

  • Scheduling daily time for writing instruction and for students to write across all subject areas (Daily Time)
  • Teaching students to use the writing process for a variety of purposes (Writing Process)
  • Providing instruction in the foundational writing skills (Foundational Skills)
  • Building an engaged community of writers (Engaged Community)

To facilitate the work of state-, district-, and school-level personnel in translating the recommended practices into actions and policy options, please refer to the State, District, School and Common Core planning templates.
