Identify the specifics of the problem behavior and the conditions that prompt and reinforce it.

Understanding the factors that prompt and reinforce a problem behavior is critical to designing appropriate interventions. Interventions should respond to the specific needs of the individual student in that particular context. Teachers should collect and track data over time about the events that preceded and followed problem behaviors. These data will enable the identification of effective interventions to reduce problem behavior.
